Oil analysis is combined with the analysis of the oil filter. The oil filter is rinsed and the debris removed is analyzed. If necessary, the alloy composition of “problematic” debris is determined by Scanning Electron Microscopy and EDXRF. The alloys are reported by AMS number. NOTE: As stated in the recent FAA AD, starting December 5th, owner/operators of many Lycoming engines will need to VISUALLY inspect the oil filter or screen at every oil change. If bronze is found, and it’s source is the Connecting Rod Bushing (see drawing below), then a visual inspection of that part should be done, and, if it is the source, the part must be replaced.
